Disobedience

Love is an act of defiance

Sebastián Lelio (who took home Oscar gold earlier this year for A FANTASTIC WOMAN) does double duty as director and co-writer of DISOBEDIENCE, based on Naomi Alderman’s tragic romantic novel of the same name. The film follows New York photographer Ronit Krushka (Rachel Weisz) who flies to London after learning about the death of her estranged father, returning to the same Orthodox Jewish community that shunned her decades earlier for her childhood attraction to Esti (Rachel McAdams), a female friend. Their fortuitous and happy reunion soon reignites their burning passion as the two women explore boundaries of faith and sexuality.

DISOBEDIENCE explores a variety of thought-provoking themes, bolstered by gripping work from leads Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, and Alessandro Nivola.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“What warmth there is (and it is considerable) radiates from its three lead performers and a script (based on Naomi Alderman‘s novel) that treats its central characters as neither hero or villain.” (Washington Post)

“A beautifully crafted tale that will make your heart ache, thanks to two standout leading performances and a great supporting one.” (Toronto Star)
