Break the Game (Filmmakers in Attendance)

After coming out as a trans woman, world-record-holding gamer, Narcissa Wright loses her massive fanbase. To win them back, she attempts to set a new world record in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while live-streaming every minute of her mythic quest. Drawing from an archive of more than 3,000 hours of Narcissa’s livestreams, intimate verite, and 8-bit animation, BREAK THE GAME is a moving exploration of gamer culture, the realities of online harassment, and the mental health implications of living a digital life.

Tribeca Film Festival, Special Jury Mention for Best New Documentary Director

“Director Jane M. Wagner takes audiences on an emotionally arresting journey through Narcissa’s innermost thoughts and desires, showcasing the duality of a passionate, dedicated gamer. Witnessing Narcissa’s journey reveals not only so much about humanity’s longing for a community but the fine line between support and dependency. Drawing from an archive of more than 3,000 hours of Narcissa’s live streams, intimate verité, and 8-bit animation, Break the Game is a moving exploration of gamer culture, the realities of online harassment, and the mental health implications of a life lived online.” (Tribeca Film Festival)

“As gaming becomes a more and more prominent aspect of modern-day youth culture, documentaries like “Break the Game” offer the human side of an ever-growing ecosystem too often reduced to pixels and memes. Needless to say, Twitch stream are more than frivolous obsessions to the people who follow them, and this documentary is poised to add a critical perspective to that conversation.” (IndieWire)

Stick around after the film screening for a live “speedrun”, wherein gamer LovelySirius will attempt to break the world record time for completing one of the Zelda series games.

LovelySirius will be providing some live commentary to both the live and online audience, as they run through the game. Audience members will have the opportunity to interact with LovelySirius and others through the live chat in the dedicated Twitch stream for the speedrun. Ticketholders are encouraged to download the Twitch app and create an account before the event if they haven’t already.
