Boy & the World

Join us at the Rio Theatre for a fun, family-friendly afternoon screening of BOY AND THE WORLD presented in association with Vancouver’sLatinRunners. Director Alê Abreu’s Oscar-nominated (Brazil; Best Animated Feature) and “wildly imagined” animated musical BOY AND THE WORLD is entirely hand-drawn by Abreu himself. Devoid of any dialogue, this jaw-dropping, kaleidoscopic fable relies on delightfully inventive and sophisticated imagery and a wild, lush soundscape to weave a profound story about a little boy who goes on an adventurous quest in search of his father. Unravelling from the young boy’s own perspective, the allegorical fantasy exposes a deeply moving subtext to convey issues of the modern world; at its heart BOY AND THE WORLD is a cautionary tale of globalization and the dangers of the massification of the economy, of the mind, and of the soul.

THE BOY AND THE WORLD ‘O Menino e o Mundo’ (Alê Abreu, 2013 / 80 mins / G) | Cuca’s cozy rural life is shattered when his father leaves for the city, prompting him to embark on a quest to reunite his family. The young boy’s journey unfolds like a tapestry, the animation taking on greater complexity as his small world expands. Entering civilization, industrial landscapes are inhabited by animal-machines, with barrios of decoupage streets and shop windows, and flashing neon advertisements that illuminate the night. The story depicts a clash between village and city, hand crafted and mechanized, rich and poor – and throughout the tumult, the heart and soul of the people beats on as a song. The film’s music is on equal footing with the stunning visuals, a soundscape of pan-flute, samba, and Brazilian hip-hop mixing with the whirling carnival colors and exploding fireworks.

“It’s like some lost globally conscious colorfest from the 1970s, reinvented with Mr. Abreu’s verve.” – NY Times

“It’s hard to put into words the wildly imagined beauty of director Ale Abreu’s drawing, with crayons and other tools kids might use.” – NPR

“Boy and the World” reminds viewers that an animated feature can be more intimate and personal than the big-budget CG extravaganzas produced by Hollywood studios.” – LA TIMES
