50 năm, một khoảng thời gian tuy ngắn cho lịch sử của một dân tộc, nhưng lại dài cho một đời người. 50 năm trước, toàn lãnh thổ Việt Nam rơi vào sự thống trị của những người Cộng Sản. Và kể từ đó, hàng triệu người dân Việt Nam đã bỏ xứ ra đi, bắt đầu là làn sóng vượt biên gian nan, hiểm nghèo của những thuyền nhân, bộ nhân làm rúng động lương tâm thế giới vào những thập niên 70, 80, và 90.

Những người Tị Nạn Việt Nam năm xưa và thân nhân của họ đã xây dựng nên những Cộng Đồng Người Việt Tự Do lớn mạnh trên khắp thế giới. Cái quá khứ Tị Nạn đó bây giờ đã bị lãng quên, hay vẫn còn hằn sâu trong tâm thức của họ? Thế hệ thứ hai, thứ ba, con cháu của những người Tị Nạn gốc Việt, đã có những đóng góp ngày càng đáng kể vào xã hội nơi họ đang sống. Bao nhiêu người trong thế hệ hiện tại và tương lai hiểu nguyên do vì sao họ được sống trong một xã hội tự do nhân bản, và có bao nhiêu người trong số đó thật sự trân quý cái giá mà cha ông họ đã phải trả?!

“Thuyền Nhân: hành trình 50 năm” – phim tài liệu dài 90 phút do Thanh Tâm thực hiện, Ethnic Channels Group và Lunar Village Production sản xuất, và được sự tài trợ một phần của chính phủ Canada (Canada Media Fund)- ghi lại những câu chuyện thật, từ chính những nhân chứng sống về những người Tị Nạn gốc Việt. Những câu chuyện đau thương được kể trong “Thuyền Nhân: hành trình 50 năm” cho thấy phần nào sự tàn khốc của xã hội Việt Nam từ sau 1975 và nỗi tang thương mà những người Tị Nạn gốc Việt đã phải trải qua. Giai đoạn quá khứ bi thảm này làm người Việt hải ngoại có thể cảm nhận rõ ràng hơn là họ đã may mắn như thế nào. Và những gương thành công trong “Thuyền Nhân: hành trình 50 năm” cũng cho thấy trong một xã hội công bằng và nhân bản, người gốc Việt có thể đạt được những thành tựu đáng ngưỡng mộ.“Thuyền Nhân: hành trình 50 năm” hy vọng làm thế hệ tương lai, cũng như người dân bản xứ thông hiểu hơn về họ, những người Tị Nạn gốc Việt.

Những câu chuyện thật trong giai đoạn lịch sử này là bài học xương máu cho những ai quan tâm đến vận mệnh tương lai của quốc gia dân tộc. Hy sinh của những người bỏ mình trên đường tìm tự do cần phải được tưởng nhớ. Những tang thương này không thể một lần nữa tái diễn trong lịch sử của dân tộc Việt, và nguyên nhân của nó cần phải bị vĩnh viễn xóa bỏ.

50 years is a short period of time for a nation’s history, but long for a human life. 50 years ago, the entire territory of Vietnam fell under the domination of the Communists. And since then, millions of Vietnamese people have left the country, starting with the wave of arduous and dangerous border crossings of boat people and refugees that shook the world’s conscience in the 70s and 80s and 90s.

Former Vietnamese refugees and their relatives have built strong Free Vietnamese Communities around the world. Has that Refugee past now been forgotten, or is it still deeply embedded in their minds? The second and third generations, descendants of Vietnamese refugees, have made increasingly significant contributions to the society in which they live. How many people in the present and future generations understand why they live in a free, humane society, and how many of them truly appreciate the price their ancestors had to pay? !

“Boat People: a 50-year journey” – 90-minute documentary film made by Thanh Tam, produced by Ethnic Channels Group and Lunar Village Production, and partially sponsored by the Canadian government (Canada Media Fund) – recorded True stories from living witnesses of Vietnamese refugees. The painful stories told in “Boat People: a 50-year journey” partly show the cruelty of Vietnamese society after 1975 and the suffering that Vietnamese refugees have had to go through. This tragic past period makes overseas Vietnamese feel more clearly how lucky they are. And the successful examples in “Boat People: a 50-year journey” also show that in a fair and humane society, people of Vietnamese descent can achieve admirable achievements. “Boat People: a 50-year journey” hopes to make future generations, as well as local people, better understand them, the Vietnamese Refugees.

True stories from this historical period are bloody lessons for those who care about the future destiny of the nation. The sacrifices of those who died on their way to freedom need to be remembered. These tragedies cannot be repeated again in the history of the Vietnamese people, and their causes must be permanently eliminated.
