CANCELLED Rio Grind Film Festival: Bloody Oranges

Due to technical difficulties, Sunday’s screening of BLOODY ORANGES is canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience. – Rio Theatre Management.

The Rio Theatre‘s Rio Grind Film Festival continues on Sunday, November 28 with a screening of French director Jean-Christophe Meurisse‘s dark, deeply satirical, and highly provocative BLOODY ORANGES, which has previously screened this year at both the Cannes Film Festival and Austin’s Fantastic Fest.

France, today. Simultaneously, a retired couple overwhelmed by debt tries to win a dance contest, as the minister of economy is suspected of tax evasion, and a teenage girl encounters a sexual maniac, while a young lawyer attempts to climb the social ladder. When the shoe drops, the winner won’t necessarily be the one we expected. With Denis Podalydès, Blanche Gardin, Christophe Paou, Guilaine Londez.

“Midway through, the screen goes dark for the briefest of moments and the following text appears: “The old world is dying, the new world struggles to be born. Now is the time of monsters.” Without giving too much away, know that the subtle tension hinted at in the film’s first half is more than fulfilled in the second. No longer a satirical comedy, “Bloody Oranges” reveals a second side of itself that recasts everything that came before in a darker, more compelling light. Few movies swap genres halfway through, and even fewer do so successfully. “Bloody Oranges” does both.” (Variety)

“With characters who say the unsayable and a plot which takes a sudden swerve and gleefully shows the unspeakable, this is a bracing provocation of a film.” (Screen International)

“For fans of offbeat cinema sprinkled with shocking splashes of violence, Meurisse finds an odd cross section of arthouse and exploitation.” (IONCinema.com)
