Amarcord

The Fantastic World of Fellini!

We are excited to present our third annual cinematic celebration of Italian Heritage Month in Vancouver with a another great selection of Italian films – from Dario Argento‘s giallo-infused “candy-coloured,” phantasmagoric nightmare of a horror classic SUSPIRIA (June 8) to another classic from one of the most iconic filmmakers ever, Federico Fellini, and the 1974 Best Foreign Picture Oscar-winner, AMARCORD.

In an Italian seaside town, young Titta (Bruno Zanin) gets into trouble with his friends and watches various local eccentrics as they engage in often absurd behavior. Frequently clashing with his stern father (Armando Brancia) and defended by his doting mother (Pupella Maggio), Titta witnesses the actions of a wide range of characters, from his extended family to Fascist loyalists to sensual women, with certain moments shifting into fantastical scenarios.

“Ribald, sweet, and sentimental, AMARCORD is a larger-than-life journey through a seaside village and its colorful citizens.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“Fellini is so bountiful with incident and observation that he makes most other film makers seem stingy.” (TIME Magazine)

Presented with the generous help and support from our friends at the Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre, Italian Day on the Drive, and the Italian Contemporary Film Festival.

AMARCORD (Federico Fellini, 1973 / 123 mins / 18A) A year in the life of a small Italian coastal town in the nineteen-thirties, as is recalled by a director with a superstar’s access to the resources of the Italian film industry and a piper’s command over our imaginations.
