A Nightmare on Elm Street

If Nancy Doesn't Wake Up Screaming, She Won't Wake Up At All!

“One, two, Freddy’s coming for you
Three, four, better lock your door
Five, six, grab your crucifix
Seven, eight, gonna stay up late
Nine, ten, never sleep again…”

The Rio Theatre‘s Friday Late Night Movie series continues on July 15 with the late, great Wes Craven‘s original 1984 horror classic A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, a title we think is due for a big screen revisit thanks to “Stranger Things.”

In this seminal slasher, several Midwestern teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund, in a truly iconic performance), a disfigured midnight mangler who preys on the teenagers in their dreams — which, in turn, kills them in reality.

After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by her and her friends’ parents may be the key to unraveling the mystery, but can Nancy and her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp) solve the puzzle before it’s too late?

“Freddy Krueger, dream killer, makes his debut. Gore galore.” (The New York Times)

“What makes Freddy truly terrifying, and an inspired invention on Craven’s part, is that he exists not in the real world but in the shadowy realm of dreams.” (Empire Magazine)

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (Wes Craven, 1984 / 91 mins / 18A) | In the dreams of his victims, a spectral child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him.

Teenagers in a small town are dropping like flies, apparently in the grip of mass hysteria causing their suicides. A cop's daughter, Nancy Thompson, traces the cause to child molester Fred Krueger, who was burned alive by angry parents many years before. Krueger has now come back in the dreams of his killers' children, claiming their lives as his revenge. Nancy and her boyfriend, Glen, must devise a plan to lure the monster out of the realm of nightmares and into the real world...
