A League of Their Own

To achieve the incredible, you have to attempt the impossible.

“There’s no crying in baseball!”

Join us at the Rio Theatre on Wednesday, August 16 for a baseball doubleheader featuring two summertime classics, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN and BULL DURHAM. See one, or see ’em both!

Director Penny Marshall‘s landmark comedy-drama A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN follows a group of rag-tag female baseball players who, as a result of America’s stock of athletic young men being depleted during World War II, participate in a professional league. The story focuses on the relationship ups and downs between competitive sisters Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) as hit the road to play ball in towns across the USA surrounded by a cast of characters including their grumpy has-been coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) and teammates (including Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell).

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (Penny Marshall, 1992 / 128 mins / PG) Small-town sisters Dottie and Kit join an all-female baseball league formed after World War II brings pro baseball to a standstill. When their team hits the road with its drunken coach, the siblings find troubles and triumphs on and off the field.

BULL DURHAM (Ron Shelton, 1988 / 108 mins / PG) In Durham, N.C., the Bulls minor league baseball team has one asset no other can claim: a poetry-loving groupie named Annie Savoy. As the team’s season begins, Annie selects brash new recruit Ebby Calvin Laloosh, whom she christens “Nuke,” to inspire with the religion of baseball. Nuke also receives guidance from veteran player Crash Davis, who settles Nuke’s erratic pitching and teaches him to follow the catcher’s lead.
