VIMFF 2024 | Remote Adventures

The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (VIMFF) returns to the Rio Theatre from February 26 – March 3.

Remote Adventures: Enjoy two extreme, human powered traverses from Iceland to Antarctica:  Plus, guest speakers Ethan Berman and Matteo Agnoloni will share their Waddington Range adventure.

POLHEIM – World Premiere (New Zealand / 60 min): Five young explorers are given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; to ski across Antarctica to the South Pole in celebration of 150 years since the birth of Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach the South Pole. Not only will they have the physical challenge of “”man-hauling”” sleds nearly 1000km in extreme weather conditions, they will also face an internal battle – 50 days of isolation in the most remote environment on the planet, with team members who are essentially strangers. The film explores themes of mortality, ambition, family and polar exploration history.

THE FORGOTTEN COAST – World Premiere (USA / 31 min): Inspired by over a decade of documenting Iceland’s glacial river systems and their intersection with the ocean from the seats of a small aircraft, Chris Burkard sets out for an immersive expedition across 41 of these rivers – by connecting a 400km series of exposed sandbars that provide a barrier between the harsh waters of the north Atlantic along Iceland’s southern coast, armed only with a fat bike & inflatable raft and accompanied by two seasoned bike-pack/rafting veterans, Steve “Doom” Fassbinder and Cameron Lawson.

Speakers in attendance: Recipients of the Coast Mountain Adventure grant, Ethan Berman along with Matteo Agnoloni will tell their tale of the circumnavigation of nine major peaks of the Waddington range. From the challenging weather to revisiting the site of an accident, they share it all at the Remote Adventures show.
