Through the story of a man shipwrecked on a tropical island inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds, Oscar-winning Dutch animator Michael Dudok de Wit‘s gorgeously animated, transcendent parable THE RED TURTLE recounts the milestones, loneliness, and hope in the life of a human being. Perfect for film lovers of all ages, this mostly dialogue-less film is a sheer delight to behold, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at this year’s Oscars.
“THE RED TURTLE adds to Studio Ghibli’s estimable legacy with a beautifully animated effort whose deceptively simple story boasts narrative layers as richly absorbing as its lovely visuals.” (Rotten Tomatoes)
“This is a timeless tale that has no need to shout (or even speak) about how deliriously beautiful it is.” (The National Post)
“This is one of those animations that creates a world so beautiful the characters need only wander around in it.” (Chicago Reader)
“It’s more sensation than story –more impressionistic than thematic. As an accomplishment alone, it should be held as a landmark… “ (Paste Magazine)

THE RED TURTLE “La tortue rouge” (Michael Dudok de Wit, 2016 / 2016 / 80 mins / PG / English subs) Shipwrecked on a deserted island, a lone man struggles to construct a raft, but his every attempt to leave the island is thwarted by an enormous sea turtle who seems intent on having him stay. Enraged, he attempts to kill the creature that is blocking his escape — but what transpires will instead open a new chapter in his life, one that will instruct him in the ways of companionship and lead him to understand that nature must take its course.
