Porco Rosso

A pig's got to fly...

Join us at the Rio Theatre for another classic (and very family-friendly!) Studio Ghibli double bill on Sunday, June 10, featuring two classics from master storyteller Hayao Miyazaki: PORCO ROSSO and PRINCESS MONONOKE.

Miyazaki’s sixth film, PORCO ROSSO (known in Japan as “Crimson Pig”) is an endearing comedy set against the backdrop of Italy (perfect for Italian Day on the Drive!) during World War 1, and follows the adventures of a fighter ace living as a freelance bounty hunter, chasing “air pirates” in the Adriatic Sea. But this is no ordinary aviator – he has been cursed with the head of a pig. Once called “Marco Pagot,” he is now known to the world as “Porco Rosso” (Italian for “Red Pig”).

This fun, family-friendly film is based on  Japanese comic Hikōtei Jidai, a three-part watercolor manga by director Miyazaki, and stars the voices of Shūichirō Moriyama, Tokiko Kato, Akemi Okamura and Akio Ōtsuka. *Please note: PORCO ROSSO screens in English. Featuring the voices of Michael Keaton, Susan Egan, Kimberley Williams and Cary Elwes. The June 10 screening of PRINCESS MONONOKE also screens in English and features the voices of Billy Crudup, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Gillian Anderson.

PORCO ROSSO “Kurenai no Buta” (Hayao Miyazaki, 1992 / 94 mins / PG / English dub) | In Italy in the 1930s, sky pirates in biplanes terrorize wealthy cruise ships as they sail the Adriatic Sea. The only pilot brave enough to stop the scourge is the mysterious “Porco Rosso”, a former World War I flying ace who was somehow turned into a pig during the war. As he prepares to battle the pirate crew’s American ace, Porco Rosso enlists the help of spunky girl mechanic Fio Piccolo and his longtime friend Madame Gina.

PRINCESS MONONOKE “Mononoke-hime” (Hayao Miyazaki, 1997 / 134 mins / PG / English dub) Ashitaka, a prince of the disappearing Ainu tribe, is cursed by a demonized boar god and must journey to the west to find a cure. Along the way, he encounters San, a young human woman fighting to protect the forest, and Lady Eboshi, who is trying to destroy it. Ashitaka must find a way to bring balance to this conflict.
