Requiem for a Dream (25th Anniversary Restoration Screening)

Darren Aronofsky‘s hyperstylish REQUIEM FOR A DREAM is a lucid and devastating fever dream of a film, with a deliberately frenzied and kinetic pace that draws its audience down the very spirals experienced by the protagonists’ own horrific descent into addictive behaviours. Imaginatively evoking the inner landscape of human beings longing to connect, to love and feel loved, the Aronofksy’s masterwork is a parable of happiness gloriously found, and tragically lost.
REQUIEM FOR A DREAM tells parallel stories that are linked by the relationship between the lonely, widowed Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn, in an Oscar-nominated performance) and her sweet but aimless son, Harry. The plump Sara, galvanized by the prospect of appearing on a TV game show, has started on a dangerous diet regimen to beautify herself for a national audience. With Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans, Jennifer Connelly, Louise Lasser, and Christopher McDonald.
“It may be too much for some viewers to take, but no one ever said addiction is pretty. And [director] Darren Aronofsky earns every right to his excesses by making sure audiences feel the loss of humanity instead of treating them like spectators at a freak show.” (Fangoria)
“Clearly influenced by the cut-and-paste of hip-hop, Requiem stokes and builds its tragic momentum like an expertly mixed dance cut, the kind that catches you so seductively in its rhythms you’ll follow it anywhere… “ (Toronto Star)
“…’Requiem For A Dream’ is so efficiently devastating that it resonates like the echo of a dying scream. Beautifully executed, but spine-jarringly uncomfortable stuff.” (Total Film)
“What makes this gruesome tale of woe worthwhile is its raw cautionary power. Be warned – despite the funky style, this film will repulse as well as compel.” (Film4)
