Oscar-nominated Canadian filmmaker Celine Song follows up her 2023 breakout hit, the romantic drama PAST LIVES, with another thoughtful take on modern love, MATERIALISTS.
Dakota Johnson stars as a young New York City matchmaker whose lucrative business gets complicated when she finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex. Like PAST LIVES, Song’s latest offers an equally mature deconstruction of the conventional rom-com while providing its trio of swoon-worthy stars (Johnson, Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans) with some of their meatiest material yet – and reaffirming the filmmaker as something of a modern master of relationship dramas.
“I do heartily recommend you see ‘Materialists,’ and that you see it for what it is, not what it kinda looks like from the outside, as pitched to you by the very sort of romance-commodification salespersons that Celine Song’s movie criticizes.” (The Wrap)
“‘Materialists’ is more bittersweet than sweet—which is what makes it so wonderful, in a wistful, elusive way.” (TIME Magazine)
“[Celine] Song lays bare the tricky parts of love, holding the messiness accountable without overplaying the drama. Instead of sweet escapism, it pulls us into the gray areas of desire, power, and performance.” (Chicago Reader)
“A hypnotic affair… Song’s contemplative writing and ethereal relationship-setting deserve some credit. She has a knack for making even the most complicated things simple and beautiful.” (Seattle Refined)
“Song resists the urge to follow any formula herself, forging questions about love and romance that can’t all be answered by the time the credits roll and the lights go up.” (Salon.com)
