Conceiving Clara (With Filmmaker Q&A)

A woman desperate to get pregnant has a difficult experience with IVF.

Clara, a 42-year-old midwife, has dedicated her life to helping women give birth, yet she yearns deeply for a child of her own. Despite her fear of medical intervention due to her age, she gives in to the pressure from her mother-in-law, Shirin, and undergoes IVF treatment. Her greatest fears come true as devastating complications force her to choose between her own life and that of her unborn child.

In recent years, the idealized concepts of motherhood have been increasingly challenged. Motherhood has been depicted as a state of mind filled with grief, doubt, pathos, and regret, and occasionally even portrayed as unnatural. Films like PIECES OF A WOMAN and TULLY, which explore the complexities and struggles of motherhood, have been critically acclaimed and celebrated with numerous awards and nominations. Millennials debate having babies and society is opening up for honest and real conversations around childfree and childless living. This fictionalized reflection of filmmakers Tarique Qayumi and Tajana Prka‘s journey through infertility paints a haunting and nuanced portrait of what it is like to want a child so desperately that you are willing to lose yourself.

Filmmakers in attendance for Q&A.
