“Beat it, creep!”
This one’s for all the movie-loving “squares,” “drapes,” juvenile delinquents and orphans out there! The Rio Theatre‘s Friday Late Night Movie series continues on September 22 with John Waters‘ musical ode to the teen rebel genre, CRY-BABY.
Infectious and gleefully camp, CRY-BABY is one of Waters’ more “accessible” (it’s solid PG fare, releasing two years after HAIRSPRAY) titles, yet it still retained the sharp, cutting satire and subversion that Waters is so well known for. A laugh-out-loud romp, the 1990 release provided star Johnny Depp with the perfect vehicle in which to lampoon his pin-up image. With Amy Locane, Polly Bergen, Ricki Lake, Iggy Pop, Traci Lords.
“It all adds up to zany, wide-eyed, quintessential Waters havoc — the “kinder, gentler” 1990s brand, perhaps. But the genuine article, nonetheless.” (Seattle Times)
“The wizard of odd still runs amok.” (Rolling Stone)
“It’s not at all difficult to declare Cry-Baby the best American movie musical in recent memory.” (OutWeek)
