The Rock (30th Anniversary Screening)

FBI chemical warfare expert Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) is sent on an urgent mission with a former British spy, John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), to stop Gen. Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris) from launching chemical weapons on Alcatraz Island into San Francisco. Gen. Hummel demands $100 million in war reparations to be paid to the families of slain servicemen who died on covert operations. After their SEAL team is wiped out, Stanley and John deal with the soldiers on their own.

“The presence of Connery is pure balm, purring those Celtic tones like smoky single-malt Scotch.”

(Newsweek)

“[Nic] Cage’s role is the better written and the more obviously winning. Yet there is no greater pleasure in the movies than watching Connery back in the saddle, undiminished, engaging in more hand-to-hand action than he ever did as Bond. “ (Independent UK)

“Director Michael Bay achieves the illusion of seriousness with some well-timed comic outbursts from Cage, whose acting gift is his ability to convince us he could do absolutely anything at any time.” (Detroit Free Press)
