VIFF 2021: Girlfriends
The airs of a life in the world of high art are unceremoniously shattered when a young high-class fashion photographer is fired from her magazine and forced to return to her hometown in order to make ends meet. Her three childhood buddies are happy to welcome her back to the neighbourhood, but Marta (Vicky Luengo) isn’t so happy to face her fall from glamour—let alone the embarrassment of moving back in with her parents, or worse, making nice with old acquaintances who wear leopard-print pants!
Marina Rodríguez Colás’ script evokes a dense interpersonal history with a careful balance between the pleasures of sly comedy and the pains of introspection, while her sister Carol Rodríguez Colás’ direction ably marshals a cast of characters who are all the more likeable for their all-too-human flaws. But above all else, it’s the authentic lifelong bond and shared wisdom between the four friends that makes this as nourishing as it is endearing.
