In 2035, James (co-director Kentucker Audley) makes an honest dollar auditing the dreams of others and assessing them back taxes for the more extravagant elements of their nighttime fantasies. Setting up shop at the rural home of elderly, free-spirited Bella (Penny Fuller), he dives into the deep end of her outdated VHS archive of dreams. Finding himself instantly enchanted by her inner world, he’s likewise enamoured with the younger Bella (Grace Glowicki) he discovers there. Intent on being with her, James embarks on a rollicking adventure in subconscious realms inhabited by seafaring rats and threatening mythical beasts.
Transforming practically every frame into a veritable diorama of candy-coloured sets, analog technology, and stop-motion creatures, directors Audley and Albert Birney have envisioned a beguilingly absurd—and absurdly beguiling—confection. As this romantic fantasy grows increasingly outlandish, it remains anchored in genuine yearning. Quick-witted and kind-hearted, it takes us by the hand and escorts us into a strange dream in which we’re only too happy to get lost together.
