You and I share the same DNA. Is there anything more lonely than that?
Cagefest – our (unofficial) Nicolas Cage Film Fest (aka, NIFF), a solid 5 days’ worth of our fave performances from one of our all-time favourite contemporary actors – continues on Sunday, October 4 with a screening of Spike Jonze’s startlingly original 2002 dramatic comedy ADAPTATION., a film that garnered Cage a second Best Actor Oscar nomination.
Nicolas Cage is Charlie Kaufman, a confused L.A. screenwriter overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy, sexual frustration, self-loathing, and by the screenwriting ambitions of his freeloading twin brother, Donald (also…. Nicolas Cage). While struggling to adapt “The Orchid Thief,” by Susan Orlean (Meryl Streep), Kaufman’s life spins from pathetic to bizarre. The lives of Kaufman, Susan Orlean, and characters depicted in her book, become strangely intertwined as each one’s search for passion collides with the others’. With Chris Cooper (who took home Oscar-gold for his turn as an eccentric orchid wrangler), Brian Cox, Tilda Swinton.
“Few scripts toss more challenging balls in the air, and Jonze juggles them all with artful, light-stepping ease. It’s magic.” (Rolling Stone Magazine)
“Cage gives one of the best performances of his recent career as the Kaufmans. He’s a natural in this role, especially when that great horse face breaks into an ingratiating grin…” (The Guardian)
“Dizzyingly original, the loopy, multi-layered Adaptation is both funny and thought-provoking.” (Rotten Tomatoes)
“In the wrong hands, the lunacy could have gotten out of control, but Jonze has near-perfect pitch. He never forces the farce, rooting even Kaufman’s wildest digressions in real emotions.” (Newsweek)
