Coco Montoya honed his music under the guidance of two blues legends – the Master Of The Telecaster, Albert Collins and British blues giant John Mayall. Coco joined Albert Collins as a left-handed drumer back in 1972 making his first visit to Vancouver that year. When off the road Albert would teach Coco guitar licks which eventually led to Montoya playing rhythm guitar in that star-studded band. After spending 5 years with Albert gigs dried up with the onslaught of disco music. At times Montoya had to work outside of music but in the early 80s legendary English bluesman John Mayall came calling and for the next ten years Coco recorded and toured worldwide with John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers.
In the early 90s Coco Montoya formed his own band and presented his debut disc “Got A Mind To Travel” on Silvertone/Blind Pig Records in 1994. Since then there have been 9 other critically acclaimed releases on Blind Pig, Alligator and Ruf Records. This will be Coco Montoya’s first visit to Vancouver in 8 years. The big left-handed guitarist is slaying audiences wherever he goes ….. “He swings like a jazz man and stings like the Iceman, Albert Collins”
Opening will be Brandon Isaak & his Trio who have just released their latest, ” Rise ‘N’ Shine”. Also known as Yukon Slim, Isaak is a absolute monster with both acoustic and electric guitars as he delves into blues, swing and early jazz.
Tickets are now on sale at outlets listed above. The show will start at 7 pm with Brandon – Coco will follow at 7.20 pm . Beer and wine will be available at The Rio and can be consumed in the big comfortable theatre seats.
