Join us at the Rio Theatre for THE YOUNG MARRIEDS, cult director Ed Wood’s (PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE) final (hardcore porno) film. For years, the movie was thought to be lost, until local movie collector and “Porn Archeologist” Dimitrios Otis found a copy of the 16mm film (released in 1972) in a pile at the old Venus Theatre on Main Street in Vancouver. The newly restored (glorious colour!) version will be screened with Otis on hand for a Q&A after the screening.

But please… Don’t get it twisted, people: The sex is hardcore (and ugly), but the dialogue is solid gold. (Emphasis on solid.)

Released in 1972, THE YOUNG MARRIEDS is the final film of the legendary director Ed Wood, who wrote and directed it using the pseudonyms Richard Trent and Hank Barnum. Wood died in 1978, a destitute alcoholic.

This fully restored (colour!) re-release and screening of the film is a final tribute to the world-renowned director. The screening celebrates the appearance of THE YOUNG MARRIEDS on DVD (aptly titled ED WOOD’S DIRTY MOVIES), which includes an essay written by Otis on the merits (or not) of the film.

And how “bad” is the movie….Low-low-budget? Check. Hair galore? Check. Props falling off walls and girl tripping over a bearskin rug? Check. That kind of thing.

Yet, Wood’s swan-song is actually a cunning “Eyes Wide Shut” subversion of the typical porn plot of the macho husband wanting to loosen up his “frigid” wife. In Wood’s take on the genre, the husband (Ben) becomes increasingly caught up in his own uptightness, while his wife (Ginnie) proves herself to be more sexually open, in ways he either doesn’t know about or can’t deal with. Along the way, Wood sneaks in his own preoccupations with “freaks and weirdos.” The ending is an outright shocker that’ll have audiences wondering where he was really at.
