Though the film received a very lukewarm response upon its release, THE DARK CRYSTAL has grown into its cult-status among movie-lovers of all ages. Remarkably, the film manages to sustain a believably mystical universe without using any human actors, instead relying upon Henson’s puppet creatures to tell its dark yet whimsical tale. Inspired by the fabled stories of the Brothers Grimm, THE DARK CRYSTAL takes place on another planet in a far-off past, and follows Jen and Kira, the last two members of the Gelfling tribe, who are trying to stop the evil Skeksis from conquering their world.

Whether you spend the day with us in your jammies or walk-of-shame your way through our doors still in your rumpled, glitter covered NYE finest, come make a butt dent that will last till next New Year’s at the Rio Theatre. We kick the day off with The Dark Crystal, followed by Twelve Monkeys, then a Rio Theatre staple and tradition for every January 1, The Big Lebowski, and we close out the first day of 2024 with THE SHiNiNG. THE DARK CRYSTAL (Jim Henson & Frank Oz, 1982 / 93 mins) | On another planet in the distant past, a Gelfling embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of a magical crystal and restore order to his world, before the grotesque race of Skeksis find and use the crystal for evil.
