VIFF 2021: The Scary of Sixty-First

When college friends Noelle (Madeline Quinn) and Addie (Betsey Brown) secure an affordable apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, it’s not only too good to be true but worse than they could’ve ever imagined. They’ve barely unpacked when an exceedingly strange investigator (director Dasha Nekrasova) darkens their doorstep and shares the suite’s sinister lineage: it was previously a love nest for the recently deceased Jeffrey Epstein. As Noelle and the visitor are set adrift in a vortex of Epstein-related conspiracy theories, Addie is possessed by the spirits of the alpha sexual predator’s young victims.

Transmitting on frequencies both genuinely sinister and wickedly comic, Nekrasova likewise borrows liberally from ’70s giallo and grindhouse aesthetics while taking dead aim at contemporary gender dynamics, internet culture, and power structures. Recalling Polanski’s claustrophobic horror and Kubrick’s incisive critiques, this outrageous psychosexual thriller channels the profound horror of this surreal era in which malevolent figures wield almost unthinkable power and influence.
