Tigers Are Not Afraid

Mexican writer-director Issa López is an emerging talent on the international genre film circuit, drawing both critical (Best Horror Director, Fantastic Fest and Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Screamfest) and audience (Audience Award Best Feature, DEDfest) accolades thanks to her remarkable third feature, TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID – a dark, fantasy-fueled fairy tale about a gang of five children trying to survive the horrific violence of the cartels and the ghosts created every day by the drug war.

We are in some northern border. Any of them. All of them. Estrella is 10 years old and has 3 wishes: The first one, that her missing mother comes back and it happens. Her mother returns but she is dead and follows Estrella everywhere. Petrified, Estrella tries to scape from her by joining a gang orphaned by violence. Soon she realizes that dead are never left behind and when you are in the middle of brutality and violence, wishes never come true the way you want them to be.

TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID is the best Guillermo del Toro movie he never made… a jaw-dropping film that blends reality and the supernatural in an absolutely beautiful way.” (Gizmodo)

“A cautionary fable, an unflinching look at the damages of drug culture, and a ray of hope to the end of that culture, TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID is a work of immense beauty, pain, fear and joy. Encompassing a vast thematic structure in an incredible effective and affective story, López puts herself firmly on the map of the current new wave of Mexican cinema.” (Screen Anarchy)
