The Salesman

Oscar Winner, Best Foreign Language Picture

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) was recently awarded his second Best Foreign Language Oscar (this time in absentia, out of solidarity for those whose movement into the US has been compromised) for the politically subversive THE SALESMAN. In keeping with his growing body of exceptional work, this film too moves quietly and capably into the realm of the profound. THE SALESMAN is a tension-filled revenge film centered on a young couple in Tehran whose relationship begins to turn sour during their performance of Arthur Miller‘s Death of a Salesman.

“A typically wrenching film for Farhadi, one that morphs from a quiet family drama to a tale of revenge, and is all the more impressive for how seamlessly it executes that shift.” (The Atlantic)

“It is a work entirely worthy of any prize anyone chooses to bestow on it, a compassionate and intelligent thing that should linger long after the 24-hour news cycle is over or the political flavour of the month goes stale.” (Globe and Mail)

“Using handheld camera and a minimum of dialogue and music, Farhadi turns the mundane into the momentous.” (Toronto Star)

“In the film’s stunning third act … Farhadi’s occasionally shaky parallels between art and life are distilled into a brilliantly staged, searingly confrontational chamber piece.” (The Washington Post)
