The Greasy Strangler

"If Barton Fink was made by John Waters, this is the sort of movie he’d write."

“Hootie tootie, disco cutie.”

It goes without saying that Jim Hoskin‘s debut feature The Greasy Strangler takes the award for Most WTF Movie of 2016. This is, unquestionably, a film that needs to be experienced (preferably on the big screen, and with a very open-minded, late night kind of movie audience), and not just seen, to be truly understood.

The Los Angeles-set tale follows Ronnie (Michael St. Michaels), a man who runs a Disco Walking tour along with his browbeaten son, Brayden (Sky Elobar). When a sexy, alluring woman (Elizabeth De Razzo) comes to take the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her attentions. It also signals the appearance of an oily, slimy inhuman maniac who stalks the streets at night and strangles the innocent, soon dubbed ‘The Greasy Strangler.’

The Greasy Strangler revels in the grotesque, with cartoonish violence, garish outfits, and exaggerated stereotypes.” (AV Club)

If you can take the assault on your senses it’s worth sticking with for a core of genuine, affecting drama and dollops of sly, quotable humour.” (Empire Magazine)

“An ugly and frequently hilarious descent into all things repellent, the debut feature from director Jim Hosking plants itself firmly in a world of filth and shock.” (The Wrap)

“Disgusting, deviant and pleasurably weird at heart. If Barton Fink was made by John Waters, this is the sort of movie he’d write.” (Indiewire)
