VIFF 2021: See for Me

Still coming to terms with her loss of sight, Sophie (Skyler Davenport) suddenly finds herself with more pressing concerns when the secluded mansion she’s housesitting is targeted by home invaders. When she frantically activates a new app that allows a volunteer to remotely serve as her eyes, she’s fortuitously connected with Kelly (Jessica Parker-Kennedy), an unflappable military vet who now applies her tactical nous to first-person shooter video games. Suddenly abetted by Kelly’s combat know-how, Sophie falls back on her own moral ambiguity to flip the script in what should’ve been a clear-cut game of cat and mouse.

Randall Okita (The Lockpicker) crafts a high-concept home invasion thriller that recalls David Fincher’s Panic Room while distinguishing itself through his collaboration with Davenport, who has personally experienced adult onset vision loss, and skillful blurring of lines between genre cinema and computer gaming. Rather than relying on tired girl-in-peril tropes, Okita serves up a progressive portrait of female camaraderie that knows how to throw one hell of a sucker punch.
