Prevenge

Baby on board.

Known primarily in the UK as both an actress (HOT FUZZ, KILL LIST,) and writer (Ben Wheatley‘s sublime SIGHTSEERS), Alice Lowe does triple duty in the unexpectedly dark indie horror comedy PREVENGE, her feature directorial debut. Shot in just 11 days, Lowe herself was seven months pregnant when she made this “post-feminist revenge film” about a pregnant woman, mourning the death of her partner, whose talkative unborn child urges her on to a bloody killing spree. Also starring Kate Dickie (THE WITCH, GAME OF THRONES), Gemma Whelan (GAME OF THRONES) and Jo Hartley.

“Ruth (Lowe) is seven months pregnant, and like many expecting mothers she believes that her baby is speaking to her through an inner voice — the only difference being that this particular tot is telling her to go on a killing spree. Still mourning the death of her husband just months before, Ruth allows her baby to coach her on murder techniques and push her onward in a quest to dispatch people who stand in her way, from a pet shop owner to a DJ to a lonely businesswoman. Through all the carnage, Ruth’s bulging belly serves as a perfect alibi — after all, who would ever suspect a cold-blooded killer could be lurking behind the sweet, glowing visage of a visibly pregnant woman?” (TIFF)

“….a smart, risky one-off, unconcerned with those (and there will be many) who can’t acquire its taste.” (Variety)

“Blends jet-black humour, edge-of-your-seat thrills and graphic gore with gleeful abandon.” (HeyUGuys)

“Lowe might want to evolve away from violent dark comedy in future projects. But this one is gruesomely successful.” (The Guardian)

“Perhaps best known previously for starring in and co-writing director Ben Wheatley’s killer caravanning comedy Sightseers, Alice Lowe births her own blackly comic gem with this assured and accomplished feature debut.” (Sight and Sound)
