O Brother, Where Art Thou? (20th Anniversary Screening)

They have a plan... but not a clue.

“Damn! We’re in a tight spot!”

Joel and Ethan Coen‘s quirky sensibilities were in complete and total order in their 2000 crime caper O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?, which is getting some much-deserved screen time at the Rio Theatre for it’s 20th Anniversary this November.

The story follows three convicts (George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson) whose collective eye is focused on retrieving a cache of hidden money following a jailbreak in Depression-era Mississippi as they embark on an epic journey (that bears more than a few similarities to Homer’s “Odyssey”).

Along the way, they fast-talk their way out of jams, sidestep alluring riverside sirens, and record a hit country song as the Soggy Bottom Boys. Stacked to the gills with old-time musicians and roots artists including Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, and the late Ralph Stanley (to name just a few), the O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? soundtrack went platinum eight times over and threw down the gauntlet at the rigid Music Row establishment – not to mention becoming a milestone in the development of the “Americana” genre as an alternative to commercial country radio. With John Goodman, Holly Hunter, Chris Thomas King, Charles Durning.

“It’s a wild, whacked-out wonder.” (Rolling Stone Magazine)

With nothing to lose and still in shackles, their hasty run takes them on an incredible journey of awesome experiences and colorful characters.
