ALT | Altered States

Saddled with a spectacularly self-involved husband and the psychological baggage of a traumatic childhood in which she witnessed her family being massacred, Holly (Clémentine Poidatz) is shaken from her domestic complacency when she attends a motivational seminar given by an infamous “dream surfing” psychic (David Sakurai) who tellingly takes to the stage dancing to “I’m Your Boogie Man” and possesses beliefs that make Scientology seem sensible by comparison. When he triggers her repressed mania, Holly is suddenly set adrift in a swirling, Argento-indebted phantasmagoria, taking us along for the demented death trip.

Having proven himself well-practiced in the dark arts of John Carpenter and Clive Barker with his 2015 breakout Baskin, Can Evrenol now brings gothic and giallo influences to the fore in this exploration of sexuality, family, social anxiety and waking nightmares. As Holly endures a succession of heightened realities, Evrenol casts even the most mundane of objects in a menacing light. (Viewers are defied to name another occasion when a shot of a toilet inspired such terror.) As Evrenol masterfully ramps up the delirium, Housewife escalates to an utterly deranged climax that’s one for the end-times.

“Gory as f*ck.”—Andrew Mack, Screen Anarchy
