As boas maneiras
Panorama | Contemporary World Cinema
Clara, a lonely, lower-class black nurse from the outskirts of São Paulo, is hired by the mysterious, wealthy and white Ana to be the nanny of her unborn child. Against all odds, the two women develop a strong bond, which, under the full moon, eventually becomes sexual. But all is not well with Ana, and a fateful night changes their plans and, indeed, alters the film itself, as a single rupture in the middle of the story reboots the narrative, and allows directors Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra to explore their main themes through divergent perspectives.
Creating a dreamy, stylized São Paulo, Rojas and Dutra decided to tell their story as a political fairy tale, and have created a warped version of a Walt Disney film, one also made under the influence of Jacques Tourneur (especially Cat People and The Leopard Man). A delicious and absorbing blend of elements, Good Manners mixes fantasy, with clear horror genre tropes (to reveal more would be spoiling things, but trust us, it’s very, very good), and the social: along with motherhood, sexual desire and body metamorphosis, materialist issues of class and race are predominant topics for exploration and especially important to consider in the contemporary Brazilian context.
