The Secret of NIMH

The Secret of NIMH

Frustrated with Walt Disney studio’s reluctance to produce the more traditional, full-length animated feature films they were known for, acclaimed animator Don Bluth and a number of his colleagues left with the intent of creating movies in the style of the old classics; The Secret of NIMH is the first film Bluth produced (he also adapted the script) following his departure. Adapted from Robert C. O’Brien‘s acclaimed children’s book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H., the film follows a fantastical tale about a widowed mouse whose home is threatened while one of her young children is gravely ill. On her way to find help, she discovers NIMH, a secret society of highly-intelligent rats who have escaped from a nearby science lab, who help the widow to protect her family and home. Starring the voices of Derek Jacobi, Dom DeLuise, Elizabeth Hartman, John Carradine, Wil Wheaton and Shannen Doherty.

“The Secret of NIMH is a dark, well-told tale that respects its young audience enough to not tone down its subject matter.” – Rotten Tomatoes

“Every character moves fluidly and imaginatively against an extravaganza of detailed background and dazzling effects, all emboldened by fascinating colored textures.” – Variety

“The animation was, as Bluth and company had promised, a spectacular return to old-school craftsmanship.” – AV Club

“What is your damage, Heather?” Dear Diary, Long before MEAN GIRLS… There was HEATHERS. Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty shine in one of the 1980s most infinitely quotable films, a viciously funny yet insightful black comedy that satirizes the messy (and sometimes deadly) politics of female friendship, young love, cliquedom, and croquet during… Continue Reading
