Radiohead: Meeting People Is Easy

“This is what you get when you mess with us.”

Can you believe that Radiohead’s seminal album OK COMPUTER is celebrating 20 years of alt-rock (whatever that is) greatness…? Neither can we! To note this musical milestone, join us at the Rio Theatre for a special screening of director Grant Gee‘s MEETING PEOPLE IS EASY, a rockumentary takes a decidedly unromantic look at the touring life of the English rock group as they finish recording their third album, the massive “OK Computer,” before traveling to Asia, Europe and North America to promote it. Released in 1998, the film follows the band as they play a series of large concerts and hold extended press conferences, all of which take a physical and mental toll on the group (including frontman Thom Yorke – a notorious introvert – who has a particularly difficult time dealing with stardom).

“The perfect visual embodiment of alternative rock’s “success = sucks eggs” mantra, Grant Gee‘s Radiohead doc turns arena stardom into a psychological horror movie. Covering the band’s whirlwind OK Computer tour, director Grant Gee offers an impressionistic snapshot of the group (especially singer Thom Yorke) slowly losing their shit as interviews, shows, traveling and tedium wear them down. Many concert films come across as non-threatening fan items; this one is as jagged and honest about its alienation as the album that spawned it.” (Rolling Stone)

MEETING PEOPLE IS EASY (Grant Gee, 1998 / 99 min / PG) An entertaining “rockumentary” about Radiohead that shows some of the tedium of being a rock star, as well as some of the fun stuff,  takes place during the promotion of their album OK Computer. The film contains a collage of video clips, sound bites, and dialogue going behind the scenes with the band on their world tour, showing the eventual burn-out.
