The House That Jack Built

The House That Jack Built

Boundary-pushing cinematic visionary Lars von Trier (ANTICHRIST, DANCER IN THE DARK, BREAKING THE WAVES) returns with one of his most daring, masterfully provocative works yet – the highly controversial THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT. The Rio Grind Film Festival presents the director’s cut of the film (the one that screened at Cannes!) for a special, one-night only engagement.

In five audacious episodes, failed architect and arch-sociopath Jack (Matt Dillon) recounts the elaborately orchestrated murders-each, as he views them, a towering work of art-that define his “career” as a serial killer. Mixing pitch black humor, transcendent surrealism, and renegade musings on everything from history to architecture to cinema, von Trier fashions a radical, blazingly personal inquiry into violence, art, and the twin acts of creation and destruction. With Uma Thurman, Riley Keough, and Bruno Ganz.

“Horrifying, sadistic, possibly brilliant.” (Indiewire)

“Nobody else makes movies like Von Trier, and if they did, they’d probably get arrested.” (Film Inquiry)

“I just happened to be nowhere near your neighborhood.” In the wake of Chris Cornell‘s untimely passing, everyone here at the Rio Theatre has been left reminiscing about the fabled, plaid flannel- coated soundtrack to the “Dream of the 90s,” and talking about what we (now) consider to be one of rock’s richest eras. Cameron… Continue Reading

The Outsiders

“Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold” S.E. Hinton‘s landmark novel ‘The Outsiders’ celebrated 50 years of staying gold in 2017; we thought it seemed fitting to revisit this classic story – and Francis Ford Coppola’s timeless film – with a prime time screening of THE OUTSIDERS on Tuesday, June 27. Hinton co-wrote the screenplay, making for… Continue Reading

Over the Edge

As a tip of the hat to Kurt Cobain and our run of the new documentary KURT COBAIN, MONTAGE OF HECK, we thought the time was right to give some screen time to OVER THE EDGE, the 70’s coming-of-age drama Cobain cited as an influence (notable the SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT) video. Starring Matt Dillon,… Continue Reading
