Marshall – CANCELLED

Justice has a name.

Live hard. Fight harder.

Join us at the Rio Theatre on Tuesday, October 13 as we tip our cinematic hat to the late, great Chadwick Boseman with a screening of the 2017 film MARSHALL, in which he starred as civil rights icon and the first African-American Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall.

Boseman’s confident performance at a key moment in the life of Justice Marshall (the first attorney for the NAACP,he won 29 of the 32 cases he argued in front of the U.S. Supreme Court – including the famous Brown v. Board of Education) is a strong showcase for his talent, as be brings depth, humanity, and justice to the legendary figure.

Set in the 1940s, against a nation teetering on the brink of WWII, a nearly bankrupt NAACP sends Thurgood Marshall (Boseman) to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur against his wealthy socialite employer in a sexual assault and attempted murder trial that quickly became tabloid fodder. In need of a high profile victory but muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall is partnered with Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad), a young Jewish lawyer who has never tried a case. With Kate Hudson, Sterling K. Brown, Dan Stevens, James Cromwell.

“‘Marshall’ takes an illuminating, well-acted look at its real-life subject’s early career that also delivers as an entertainingly old-fashioned courtroom drama.” (Rotten Tomatoes)

“Surprises at every turn.” (Wall Street Journal)

Reginald Hudlin’s movie about the crusading lawyer and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall smartly keeps the focus tight.” (The New York Times)

MARSHALL (Reginald Hudlin, 2017 / 118 mins / PG) Young Thurgood Marshall faces one of his greatest challenges while working as a lawyer for the NAACP. Marshall travels to conservative Connecticut when wealthy socialite Eleanor Strubing accuses Black chauffeur Joseph Spell of sexual assault and attempted murder. He soon teams up with Sam Friedman, a local Jewish lawyer who’s never handled a criminal case. Together, the two men build a defense while contending with racist and anti-Semitic views from those who deem Spell to be guilty.
