Cagefest 2020: Vampire’s Kiss

“A, B, C, D, E, F, G….”

Cagefest – our (unofficial) Nicolas Cage Film Fest (aka, NIFF), a solid 5 days’ worth of our fave performances from one of our all-time favourite contemporary actors – would not possibly be complete without what many people (perhaps even the many himself…?) consider to be his “Cage-iest” performance in the quirky1988 comedy VAMPIRE’S KISS.

Cage stars as Peter Loew, a sleazy NYC literary agent, who prowls the bars in the evening looking for some action. One night he hooks up with a mysterious, sexy woman named Rachel (Jennifer Beals) and in the course of their relations, she bites him on the neck. When he wakes up the next morning, he doesn’t feel quite right…. He is irritable, and has a hard time dealing with life at the literary agency, where his secretary takes the brunt of his ire. Suddenly, it dawns on Peter that he was bitten by a vampire, so he goes out and buys a set of real fangs… Then, the chaos begins. With Maria Conchita Alonso, Elizabeth Ashley, Kasi Lemmons.

“What really makes this worth seeing is Cage’s outrageously unbridled performance.” (Chicago Reader)

“What truly distinguishes the movie is Cage’s performance, which is so off the wall that even if you don’t like it you have to watch in awe.” (TV Guide)

The Gentlemen Hecklers return to the Rio Theatre on Thursday, March 16 with another fine feature from the Arnold Schwarzenegger canon, THE RUNNING MAN. Schwarzenegger is reunited with his PREDATOR costar Jesse Ventura in this adaptation of Stephen King‘s dystopian, sci-fi novel (set in an authoritarian USA in, ummm, 2017) of the same name.
