Cagefest 2020: Bringing Out the Dead

Cagefest 2020: Bringing Out the Dead

Cagefest – our (unofficial) Nicolas Cage Film Fest (aka, NIFF), a solid 5 days’ worth of our fave performances from one of our all-time favourite contemporary actors – continues on Sunday, October 4 with a screening of Martin Scorsese’s dark, edgy supernatural drama BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, a which was written by Paul Schrader (TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL) and adapted from the novel by Joe Connelly.

Once called Father Frank for his efforts to rescue lives, New York City paramedic Frank Pierce (Nicolas Cage) sees the ghosts of those he failed to save around every turn. After his disheartening and haunting career wears him down, Pierce  begins to collapse under the strain of saving lives and witnessing deaths. Through the course of a few nights, three co-workers (John Goodman, Ving Rhames, Tom Sizemore) accompany Pierce as he grasps for sanity and pushes to be fired. Before Pierce falls off the edge, he still has a hope when he forms a friendship with a victim’s daughter (Patricia Arquette).

“Its hard-to-pin-down tone is frighteningly original — simultaneously world-weary and adolescent with an aura of perpetual anxiety, as if the characters and filmmakers were in pursuit of a catharsis everyone knows will never come.” (Chicago Reader)

“A frankly disturbing experience since Cage is at his most manic, the images are brutal, the documentary-style background intense and the (inevitable) theme of redemption a long time emerging.” (Film4)
