ALT | Altered States
With her psyche torn and tattered by her unfaithful, inattentive spouse and unruly brood, Jill’s (writer-director Marianna Palka) repressed fury is unleashed, leaving the suburban housewife in a fugue state that sees her conducting herself like a vicious junkyard dog hopped up on amphetamines. As she claims the basement as her territory (and marks it accordingly), her husband Bill (Jason Ritter, wonderfully hapless) is left with no other choice than to tentatively step up and clumsily embrace domestic responsibilities.
Rightfully hailed as “a hilarious and vicious bite at the patriarchy” (Screen Anarchy), Palka’s Bitch is a feral satire that’s equally bold in its writing, direction and performance as it sinks its teeth into the subject of contemporary gender politics.
“[A] ferocious feminist satire… The wacky drama is aided in large part by Morgan z Whirledge’s chaotic score, which erupts with discordant melodies… that convey the sheer chaos of a stable world facing its reckoning… A fierce portrait of unwieldy comeuppance, it’s both hilarious and terrifying to watch… By its end, Bitch focuses as much on what it means to wake up to the frustrations of an American dream coming to pieces as it is a fierce indictment of them.”—Eric Kohn, IndieWire
If A Woman Under the Influence and Mr. Mom had a baby, it would be Bitch.”—Elijah Wood
