Panorama | Spotlight on France
Remember the “killer tire” movie, Rubber, from VIFF 10, French DJ-turned-filmmaker Quentin Dupieux’s homage to Hollywood B-movies like Spielberg’s Duel? Well, Dupieux is back with his first all-French production, and he is as surreal, absurd, juvenile and ingenious as ever. In a film that cites everything from classic French films of the 80s (Garde à vue, especially) to Buñuel’s The Phantom of Liberty, the writer-director-cinematographer-editor’s latest stars the hilarious Benoît Poelvoorde (Man Bites Dog) as a police captain who spends a night surreally interrogating a witness (Grégoire Ludig) about a body the latter has discovered outside his apartment building. Accidental death (by elementary-school geometry triangle, no less), lunatic jokes and general mayhem ensue…

“[Dupieux’s films are] equal parts Michel Gondry, Tex Avery and the Coen brothers… His latest… [is a] fun… exercise in genre-bending.”—Jordan Mintzer, Hollywood Reporter

“Buñuel is so fundamental that I would find it abnormal not to go through him. He opened a lot of doors and allowed so much freedom. Without having really researched his writing methods, I believe that I follow them a little: I leave first a large part to the unconscious, the surreal ideas that fall from the sky, then, with all that, I build a coherent narrative… So far, all my films are built like nightmares… In Keep an Eye Out, it’s a softer nightmare, in which you feel good, but it’s still the story of a guy who experiences things he does not understand…”—Quentin Dupieux
