Sea to Sky | BC Spotlight |

Some are unlucky at love. Others are just plain inept. The latter populate writer-director Bruce Sweeney’s heartfelt farce that delivers finely tuned dysfunction while featuring copious local haunts and a surplus of skeletons in closets.

An engaging bird’s nest of sordid—or just plain sorry—tales, Kingsway kicks off at the 2400 Motel on the titular thoroughfare and comes to a raucous, raunchy close six kilometres away at Main Street’s China Cloud Gallery. In between, it lingers in the veritable cul-de-sacs its players lives have become. Camille Sullivan shines as Jess, a rough diamond who must keep Matt (Jeff Gladstone), her emotionally frail brother, from unravelling as his marriage to unrepentantly brash Lori (Colleen Rennison) predictably implodes. Meanwhile, matriarch Mary (Gabrielle Rose) balances romantic trysts with some amateur sleuthing.

As Sweeney delights in pulling rugs out from under his cantankerous cast, he keeps viewers equally off-balance. And even before the film’s closing number is belted out by Rennison, the dialogue sings in this comedy of ill manners.

“(Sweeney’s) best movie in years.”—Norman Wilner, NOW Magazine

Colossal

Soon to be cult-hit COLOSSAL is Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo at his visionary best in a genre defying mash-up that’s equal parts sci-fi “kaiju” monster movie and metaphor-laden revenge-fueled romantic(?) drama. Anne Hathaway stars as Gloria, a woman whose life falls apart when her alcoholism and party-girl tendencies get her fired and kicked out of… Continue Reading
