Vancouver Fringe Festival: Sober But Never Clean

Yuk Yuk’s and TooFar.TV Present:

Sober But Never Clean
by Richard Glen Lett

Directed by TJ Dawe

“Hilarious, beautiful, haunting and ultimately hopeful, this show is not to be missed.”
“Richard Lett spent his whole career building a wall between himself
and his audience – and takes one hour to tear it down.”

“Richard Lett is a courageous, comedic artist turning the difficulties of his life into comedy gold. I am proud to support him.” – Yuk Yuk’s CEO Mark Breslin
“It’s a different kind of experience for the comedy club on Cambie. The show incorporates storytelling, music, and slam poetry, but don’t get the wrong idea—there’s still standup, and it’s still funny. Even with his personal transformation, Lett is still Lett, after all.” Guy MacPherson – Georgia Straight

VANCOUVER, BC…  Richard Lett first did stand-up comedy in 1986. Thirty years later he returns to his longtime home of Vancouver, to tell the story of how his legendary comedy career began, how it led him into the depths of addiction, how it almost killed him, and how he does it sober now in his hit one-man show “Sober But Never Clean.” Long-time friend and colleague TJ Dawe, who dramaturges and directed the show, was instrumental in encouraging Lett that doing a show about addiction in stand-up comedy could help a lot of people.  As Lett says in his show, “TJ could lose his phone and do a show about it! When I went into recovery, he was adamant that I do a show about it. I just wanted to get out of the homeless shelter before I started work on it.”

Yuk Yuk’s CEO Mark Breslin saw the show at the Hamilton Fringe Festival and also encouraged Richard, asking Lett to do the show in all his comedy clubs. Now Richard is touring the show nationally at all the Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Clubs, appearing at recovery conventions and doing fundraisers for treatment facilities, including (near and dear to his heart) private shows for the clients at the King Haven Treatment Center where he was a client. Richard says “Being able to use my abilities to be of service to people has given me new energy as an entertainer – and bolsters my own recovery every day.” Along  Sober But Never Clean takes place at the Rio Theatre, 1660 East Broadway.

Part of the brilliant 7 shows by 7 artists, this “bring your own venue” collaboration includes Gary Jones’ Ask for Details, TJ Dawe’s Burn Job, Charlie Ross’ One Man Dark Knight, Jan Derbyshire’s  Certified, Beverly Elliot’s Sink Or Swim and Monster Theatre’s Til Death: the Six Wives of Henry the VIII.
