The RIO GRIND FILM FESTIVAL Call for Submissions!

Time to get your GRIND ON, Vancouver!

We are thrilled to announce the first installment of our new genre film festival, The Rio Grind, taking place November 2-4, 2012. We want your Film Shorts or Feature length submissions. Deadline is October 15, 2012. Submission Fee can be paid online here. Please send directly to the Rio Theatre.

Theatre owner and operator Corinne Lea and the Rio team of Film Geeks, are “huge fans” of genre films, has made a point of regularly programming obscure and cult features into the theatre’s schedule for years, in addition to hosting local competitive film festivals like the annual Dead On Film Zombie Short Film Competition.

Following the ongoing success of the Rio’s Horror Nights film series, hosted by identical twin directors Jenn and Sylvia Soska of “Dead Hooker in a Trunk” and the upcoming “American Mary” fame, a festival celebrating the best of genre seemed like a no-brainer. “We always have such an amazing, enthusiastic response from our cult film audiences with everything from Dead on Film, Late Night Horror Nights and Indie Skate Boarding Film Premieres that we knew it was time to bring them something bigger. This festival is going to be all about the fans. We want to bring them the best of the best indie films from around the world. Vancouver needs a film festival like this, with alternative, edgy films that you can’t see anywhere else,” says Lea.

Vancouver’s own Soska sisters will be on hand as consultants and judges for The Rio Grind. “Vancouver has long been a town that focused on the different, from acclaimed television series like THE X-FILES to our diverse multicultural and multi-subculture mix of population, we have an identity that suits and thrives in our often grey and rainy city scape,” explains Sylvia. “A town that lives and breathes genre so wholly has been only missing one thing – a film festival that celebrates this romance with the unusual and unique. I am thrilled that a theatre that so embraces the soul of the community, the Rio Theatre, will be the ones ushering in this new and needed festival that counter balances the mainstream and puts the focus on the independent artists.”

The Rio Grind Film Festival is currently looking for submissions to screen independent horror, action, grindhouse, erotica, fantasy, documentary, animation as well as science fiction shorts and features from both Canada and around the world. Prizes will be awarded by both a judging panel and the festival’s audience in several categories. In addition to current and emerging talent, there are plans to screen classic retrospective titles rarely seen in the big screen, opportunities for director and talent appearance and Q&As, as well as panels and workshops that will appeal to both fans and aspiring filmmakers.

Jennifer Copping

Originally from the Sunshine Coast, Jennifer has been performing, teaching and directing for over 25 years. Beginning with a love of dance and singing which led to a love for acting and then directing, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her teaching. Career highlights include playing the role of Mary Delgado in the Toronto Production of “Jersey Boys”, Sally Simpson in the Who’s “Tommy”, “Les Miserables” (National Tour) and “Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” with Donny Osmond.  Along with over 50 film and TV credits she has directed many plays here in Vancouver as well Toronto’s “Almost, Maine”. In addition to teaching, she regularly coaches many young actors around the city. Upcoming projects include the feature film release of “Becoming Redwood” and directing the play “Chicken” in August, 2012.

Jodi Derkson

Jodi started acting at the ripe of 12 and has immersed herself in the performing arts ever since. As a BC Certified Drama teacher with over fifteen years of professional teaching experience in the public school system she has created, in collaboration with her brilliant students, over twenty-five original productions.  Jodi holds a Masters of Education in curriculum development and has attended classes at The Actors’ Studio in Montreal, The William Davis Centre, and performed professionally for a number of years. Her real passion lies in directing and developing original curriculum to keep her students engaged so that they learn how to act without “acting”.  She is excited to work out of The Rio Theatre and enjoys its intimate professional space. Her focus is for her acting students to have a fantastic time honing their acting skills while developing tools to take into their professional and personal lives.

Summer Youth Performance Camp

Michelle D’Hersey and Jodi Derkson join forces to bring you The Summer Performance Camp at The Rio Theatre.  We offer an amazingly creative and exciting week for all those involved.  With song, dance, and acting the students will develop a play together and learn the true meaning of creative collaboration.  Spirits are sure to soar when participants reach their final goal of performing on the stage, lighting and all, for their friends and family to enjoy.  In one full week the students will play drama games, hone improvisation skills, practice dance by learning routines, create scenes/skits on a desired theme, and rehearse all elements together to create their original final product.

Michelle Hersey and her D’hercy Dance Co have been conducting fantastically creative dance classes in Vancouver since 1990, and Jodi Derkson, BC certified Acting teacher with over fifteen years of professional experience (and many successful students thriving in the entertainment industry) are sure to wow you with their collaborative curriculum and incredible original final production for public viewing.
